GreenWorks 25142 10 Amp Corded 16-Inch Lawn Mower

With all the different types of mower available on the market these days, it’s easy to get lost in the detail of all the fancy features and technological gizmos, when what you’re really looking for is something that will give your yard a trim once every couple of weeks, nothing more, nothing less. This can often be the case for people who’ve just bought their first house and don’t necessarily have the cash to be splashing on expensive lawn mowers just yet but don’t want their yard to become overgrown. It doesn’t always follow that spending more means you’ll get more value. Every purchase should be tailored to your specific needs. That’s where, for many people, this nice little peach from GreenWorks comes in.

No frills

The 25142 is an electric cord powered lawn mower designed to do the simplest jobs with the minimum fuss. You can buy an additional 50-yard extension cord which should be enough for most small yards. There’s always the option of switching to another outlet or using a further extension cord if you need more slack. There’s a manual lever which you can use to adjust the height of the blades to five positions ranging from 5/8 inch up to 2 5/8 inches. The blades will cut a path 16 inches wide. There’s no cruise control, either. You push this with your hands.

The ultimate sophistication

There’s a quote attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, no less, which says something along the lines of ‘simplicity is the ultimate sophistication’. I’m not joking when I say that we can talk about the 25142 in those terms. It overcomes the problems of other lawn mowers simply by not causing them. For example, the lack of a gas or other large motor means that it doesn’t have the power to drive itself up steep gradients and through long, wet grass. On the other hand, it’s light enough for the user to push without too much exertion, simply because it doesn’t have a large motor. It’s also quieter than other lawn mowers for the same reason. No need to buy ear protectors with this mower! Another benefit of this is that there are no dirty fumes or other emissions polluting your garden and the environment in general.

What’s to love about it?

The cutting mechanism is steady and the blades are strong, so they’re going to last for a decent amount of time. It’s perfect for small yards – you can lift it out with one hand, plug it in and go. That’s all there is to it. It’s a great choice for people whose yards have a hilly area or a slope, as the mower is so lightweight, you can still do it with one hand. If all you need is a simple and straightforward mower, this should suit you fine.

What’s not to love about it?

The 25142 runs into difficulties when you ask it to do anything that’s not 100% straightforward, but I even have some concerns before we get to that. The first comes from the fact that you’re going to be using it with an extension cord. You need to take care not to cut the cord with the mower blade as this can be extremely dangerous. As mentioned above, you can push this mower with one hand, which is just as well as you should be carrying the cord in the other hand, raveling and unraveling it as necessary and always taking care to keep it away from the blade. Use a bright-colored cord if possible.

There have been a number of complaints about the quality of material used on features away from the deck – for example, the height-adjustment lever seems to break too easily. Also, you’re going to struggle to get it through long or wet grass – you’ll have to go very slowly and even then the blades and small motor might not be up to the job. If you anticipate any complications with your lawn whatsoever, you’re probably better off going for a sturdier model.

The verdict

As a budget lawn mower, the 25142 definitely gets my thumbs up. It’s a simple tool for a simple job and that’s that. Just as you use a cheese knife for cutting cheese, you use a straightforward lawn mower for cutting a straightforward lawn. Just don’t use a cheese knife to try to cut a steak! If your yard is fairly flat, not so large in area and you don’t try to mow it when the grass is overgrown or wet, this lawn mower will suit you fine.
